Where these prices come from

Installed rates per square metre are from Kensington Systems' school canopies page, which publishes "£350 to £750 (ex VAT) per sqm for a fully installed canopy" in three size bands: £500 to £750 up to 50 m², £450 to £550 for 50 to 100 m² and £350 to £450 over 100 m². Style and side-panel factors are worked out from The Shelter Expert's published list prices for canopies, walkways and cycle shelters; each shows a second figure exactly 20% higher, so we read the lower one as excluding VAT, and these are supply prices with installation quoted separately. Shade sail and tensile canopy prices are from Broxap's schools range. Contract values are from award notices on Contracts Finder and Find a Tender, linked in the table above. All read 26 October 2026.

We are not connected to any of these firms or buyers, and the figures are a guide, not a quote. Because rates change at 50 m² and 100 m², a canopy just over a band can show a lower total than one just under it; a real quote will smooth this out.

School canopy price questions

Why are bigger canopies cheaper per square metre?

Design, survey, delivery and setting up on site cost much the same for a small or large canopy, so they are spread over more area. Published rates fall from £500 to £750 per m² for small canopies to £350 to £450 over 100 m².

Does the price include foundations?

The per-m² rates are for fully installed canopies, which normally includes standard foundations. Poor ground, buried services, a new base or long drainage runs are extra. Ask for groundworks as a separate line.

Do schools pay VAT on a canopy?

VAT at 20% is charged. Most maintained schools and academies can recover it through their local authority or the academies VAT refund scheme; independent schools depend on their own VAT position. Check with your finance team.

What else could add to the price?

Side panels, glass roofs, lighting, heating, solar panels, new surfacing, planning or building control fees, and out-of-hours working.

How accurate is the calculator?

It gives a typical range from published prices. A site survey and written quote are the only way to get a real price.

How many quotes should we get?

Follow your finance policy. Many schools get at least three for works of this size, all on the same specification so they can be compared line by line.
