Entrance canopies for schools

An entrance canopy covers the space outside a door: the main reception, a classroom exit to the playground, the nursery door or the gate where parents collect. Most are wall-mounted or on posts at the front. Published list prices start at about £3,320 plus VAT supplied only for a curved entrance canopy, and a 6 m × 3 m entrance canopy typically costs £9,000 to £13,500 plus VAT installed.

Where entrance canopies help most

  • Visitors and parents queue outside reception in the rain.
  • Classroom doors open straight onto the playground and rain blows in.
  • Nursery parents wait with buggies at drop-off and pick-up.
  • Wet feet at the door make the entrance floor a slip risk.
  • The main entrance needs to look welcoming and be easy to find.
  • A door is used as a fire exit and needs to stay clear of ice and puddles.

What a good quote includes

Ask for these six points in writing. Two quotes that cover them can be compared line by line.

  1. Fixing to the wall

Whether the wall can take the load, what fixings are used, and how the canopy is sealed to stop water getting in behind it.

  2. Doors, windows and signage

Clearance over doors that open outwards, windows, CCTV, lights and signs, so nothing is blocked or needs moving.

  3. Site-specific structural calculations

Wind and snow loads worked out for your postcode, height and exposure, not a generic rating.

  4. Gutters and drainage

Where the rainwater goes: into an existing drain, a soakaway, or onto the ground. Run-off onto a play surface becomes ice in winter.

  5. Planning and building control

Whether the installer thinks permission or approval is needed, who applies, and who pays the fee.

  6. Warranty and maintenance

Separate warranty periods for the frame, roof sheets and fabric, plus what cleaning or inspection keeps them valid.

How an entrance canopy project runs

  1. Brief and budget

Agree what the canopy is for, where it goes, roughly how big, and the budget or funding route. Measure the space and photograph it.

  2. Site survey

The installer checks ground conditions, drainage, buried services, access for machinery and how close the boundary and buildings are.

  3. Design and checks

You get a drawing, the structural calculations for wind and snow at your site, and advice on whether planning permission or building regulations approval is needed.

  4. Installation

Foundations go in first and need time to cure, then the frame and roof go up. The site is fenced off from pupils, and contractors sign in under your safeguarding rules.

Questions people ask

Do school entrance canopies need planning permission?

Often they fall within permitted development for schools under Class M, but an extension within 10 m of the boundary must not be taller than the building or 5 m, and on article 2(3) land such as a conservation area the materials should look similar to the building. Listed buildings always need consent.

Wall-mounted or on posts?

Wall-mounted cantilever canopies leave the ground clear, which suits busy doors and paths. They need a strong wall and cost more. Canopies with front posts are cheaper and can project further.

Glass or polycarbonate?

Laminated glass looks smart at a main entrance and lasts well but is heavier and costs much more. Polycarbonate is lighter, cheaper and the usual choice for classroom doors. Both can be specified as non-fragile.

How long does an entrance canopy take to fit?

Most small entrance canopies are fitted in a day or two. Manufacture usually takes several weeks, so the lead time is the main wait.

Can the entrance stay open during the work?

Usually, with a protected route and work timed outside the busiest times. If it is the only main entrance, plan the install for a holiday or a weekend.
