Playground canopies for schools
A playground canopy turns part of the yard into a space pupils can use in rain and strong sun, so wet play does not mean a day indoors. Most are steel frames with polycarbonate roofs, free-standing or fixed to the building. A 12 m × 6 m canopy typically costs £32,400 to £39,600 plus VAT installed, and larger canopies cost less per square metre.

Why schools add a playground canopy
- Wet play keeps classes indoors and lunchtimes become hard to supervise.
- There is no shaded area for hot days in the summer term.
- Early years and key stage 1 need covered outdoor provision all year.
- The playground is used for PE, but only when it is dry.
- Lunchtime queues or overflow seating need cover.
- Breakfast and after-school clubs want to use the outside space.

What a good quote includes
Ask for these six points in writing. Two quotes that cover them can be compared line by line.
Site-specific structural calculations
Wind and snow loads worked out for your postcode, height and exposure, not a generic rating.
Foundations and groundworks
Who digs, who removes the spoil, what happens if buried services or poor ground are found, and whether making good the surface is included.
Gutters and drainage
Where the rainwater goes: into an existing drain, a soakaway, or onto the ground. Run-off onto a play surface becomes ice in winter.
Clearance and post positions
The height under the gutter and where the posts land, so they do not cut across games markings, fire routes or the line of sight for supervision.
Safeguarding and site safety
How the work area is fenced from pupils, sign-in rules for operatives, and working hours that suit your timetable.
Warranty and maintenance
Separate warranty periods for the frame, roof sheets and fabric, plus what cleaning or inspection keeps them valid.

Brief and budget
Agree what the canopy is for, where it goes, roughly how big, and the budget or funding route. Measure the space and photograph it.
Site survey
The installer checks ground conditions, drainage, buried services, access for machinery and how close the boundary and buildings are.
Design and checks
You get a drawing, the structural calculations for wind and snow at your site, and advice on whether planning permission or building regulations approval is needed.
Order and lead time
Most canopies are made to order. Allow several weeks for manufacture, so order in spring for a summer holiday install.
Installation
Foundations go in first and need time to cure, then the frame and roof go up. The site is fenced off from pupils, and contractors sign in under your safeguarding rules.
Handover
Collect the warranty, the structural calculations, any approvals and the maintenance instructions for your estate records.
Questions people ask
How big should a playground canopy be?
Work back from how many pupils need to use it at once and for what: shelter at break, a class learning outside, or seating. Many school canopies are 4 m to 6 m deep and as long as the space allows. Bigger canopies cost less per square metre.
Do playground canopies need planning permission?
In England many fall within permitted development for schools under Class M: within 25% of the existing footprint or 250 m², whichever is greater, a height limit of 5 m within 10 m of the boundary, and nothing within 5 m of homes next door. Playing fields, listed buildings and conservation areas need more care. Check with your planning authority.
Will a canopy make the playground dark?
Clear or opal polycarbonate lets most of the light through. Opal or tinted sheets cut glare and heat. Solid steel roofs are darker underneath and can make the classrooms next to them darker too.
Can pupils climb on it?
They will try. Ask for posts without footholds, guttering out of reach and a roof rated non-fragile, and put the canopy where staff can see it.
Is a playground canopy covered by CIF funding?
Rarely on its own. The CIF 2027 to 2028 guidance puts compliance, health and safety and weather tightness first, and says works with weak evidence of condition need will not be funded. External shading to tackle overheating is in the highest priority band only where it is part of a serious condition case.
When is the best time to install?
The summer holiday gives the most time, so book survey and design in spring. Smaller canopies can go in during half-term or term time with the area fenced off.
